America West at SFO: WTF?!

Did anyone else have an absolutely miserable experience at the American West/US Airways ticket counter at SFO around the holidays? I am never, ever flying this airline again. The ticket agent who was supposed to be answering questions of the people in the 100 people deep line told me that she didn’t have time to answer my question and then flat out lied to me, telling me that my flight was delayed when it was perfectly on time. We were at the airport very early, prepared for the throngs of people, but America West/US Airways displayed a level of incompetence and apathy that I’ve simply never seen from an airline. It was unbelievable.

It didn’t end at the ticket counter, unfortunately, but the story is too long to really be relevant. Let’s just say 45 minutes of unexplained sitting at the gate before departure and a sprint through Vegas added to our frustration, but it all culminated with the women at the America West counter in Philly calling my boyfriend an idiot to his face. A manager promised a $150 voucher. We’ll never use it.

You’re not the only one. A friend of mine just posted a whole saga of unbelievable incompetence on their part…unbelievable except that I had my own unbelievably miserable experience with them a couple years ago, which was when I vowed to never fly with them again.

They so outrageously were clownfucking me on my trip that I head-butted the ticket counter in frustration while trying to book a replacement flight on my way back…which prompted the ticket agent to warn me that any futher head-butting of even inanimate objects would result in my being barred from flying.

Anyway: America West/USAir seem to have been particularly bad during the holiday season, but as far as I’m concerned, they were bottom-of-the-barrel to start with. I literally never had an America West trip proceed without some sort of snafu due to a late/cancelled flight. I wouldn’t fly with them if they literally paid me to do so.

I had problems with them too! Every leg of my trip was overbooked, including the connection back to SFO from Las Vegas that was subsequently cancelled… not delayed, not postponed, straight-up cancelled! I gave up and rented a car and DROVE back to SF! HA! I figured even if I took the next available flight (the next day) I was risking another cock-up, and hey, it’s only 600 miles…

I have to say that the people working for them seemed reasonably competent, fair-minded and friendly, but something is clearly wrong. I’ll never fly them again either. Also the $5 breakfast croissant thingy was soggy and gross.

I have not flown America West since 2000 because of the many times they ruined trips for me due to delayed flights, mechanical problems, etc. They are idiots and I would bet unsafe. They are clowns and I cannot believe they are still in business. US Airways is not much better. They love to book too many flights out of La Guardia and if there is even one little problem (like rain), they have to cancel or delay numerous flights. The two deserve each other.

Apart from an annoying delay indirectly due to Denver weather, it wasn’t completely horrible. My dad, on the other hand, was trying to get on the same return flight as me (Albuquerque->Phoenix->SFO), and after looking it up, he saw that they changed his itinerary at the last minute to be routed through Las Vegas before going to Phoenix. He called them and complained, and they switched it, but not before charging him an extra $150 without telling him.

I remember when I was still in high school and moved to Las Vegas with family, I tried to get a ticket to fly back to Sacramento airport for a high school prom, and AmericaWest had my ticket booked to SFO!! Luckily I noticed the mess up before getting on the plane, but had to buy another ticket and get on a flight a day later :-/

When I used to fly for a living few times a week, my coworkers and I called it “America’s Worst”…
