Sounds of the City: Bridge Humming
Have you ever listened to this bridge (I think it’s the bay Bridge) while walking towards it?
Emitting a constant hum, not unlike a river flowing over rocks, its almost pleasing. Almost, because you know its also a river of pollution. Man made and depending on your viewpoint a necessary evil.
Back to the sound, at first I didn’t know where it was coming from, walking along the downtown waterfront. Then I looked up and made the connection.
Do you hear it? What’s your impression of its hum?
It is, in fact, the Bay Bridge.
The ambient noise from the bridge is quite calming some days.
Nice resonant sound. If you listen carefully, you might actually be able to hear a difference when the weather changes.
I looked at a property that was pretty much right under the Bay Bridge. Cool place. Even had a private patio. But the quite calming sound… was deafening.
I agree that the sound is different depending on weather (and esp. wind). I loved it when it was super foggy recently.
There are definately varying effects of atmospheric noise. I used to live on the cable car line, and that constant whirrrrrr of the subterrainian cable? It somehow resonated down in my bone marrow. Not in a good way.
