Mural Maintainers Mooch on Muni

While I was riding the N Judah home this evening, a man who I later discovered was writer and bike mural guardian Joel Pomerantz hopped on and began a spiel about donating small amounts of cash to support maintenance and restoration of the Duboce Bikeway Mural. A Bay Area Reporter article tells more about the maintenance work underway.

Funding of public art being scarce, he announced, mural maintainers sometimes have to ask people on trains for help. I was surprised at how quickly so many people began digging in their wallets and purses. An unscientific guess is that people love the mural. In exchange for my $5 donation, I got a keen set of seven cards depicting the mural from end to end, with information on the back of each card about the history of the mural and the details and people depicted in it. I was even surprised to find my friend Barce portrayed among others, though he surprises me often enough that I’m getting used to it. End-to-end the cards are seven feet long, and I know the perfect place to put them.

Cool! I’m going to have to plan some N Judah excursions in the hope of running into that card-carrying solicitation crew.
