No Parking at Bloomie’s, Boo Hoo.

Are people really complaining about how there are no new parking facilities for the Westfield Centre? Apparently so, considering the Chronicle did an article on it: Attention, shoppers: Traffic tight S.F. mall expands — but parking spots remain the same.

Come on! According to the article, thirty-two transit lines go through there. THIRTY-TWO. It’s practically on top of a BART station. TAKE PUBLIC TRANSIT, it’s why we have it! Are people in the Bay Area really this lazy?

The irony is that people will spend 45 minutes searching for parking around the mall, rather than park at the Millbrae station and take a 15 minute BART ride in.

Well, it’s more like a 35 minute BART ride from Millbrae to Powell Street station, compared to a 20 minute drive. Plus, it’s a $7.60 round-trip fare. If there are more than 2 of you going, it makes sense to drive. My wife and I went to the mall on Saturday and there was plenty of parking in the 5th & Mission garage. SOMA traffic was worse than usual, but not too bad if you know the back streets. But it still makes more sense for people coming from the Peninsula to drive rather than take public transportation. Time is precious, and public transportation into the City is not that great.
