carnival 2006

Did you go? Me neither. Friends went and reported back about the bad crowd control, but the Flickr tags tell a different beautiful, feathery, glittery, smiley story. has an astouding 679 photos; majeztic has a few up, too. Enjoy.

It would have been fun to attend it but there’s always next year!

My partner used to dance in a Carnaval samba troupe, and one year I went with them down the parade route, carrying water and trying to keep the crowd from getting too grabby.

I know plenty of queer people do Carnaval, so I intend no disrespect when I say this, but in a way Carnaval is like Pride Day for straight people. But I wonder how many religious fundamentalists have expressed outrage at the amount of flesh displayed at Carnaval.

Wow, I danced in a Carnival troupe one year too — wish I had a friend like you to fend off the grabbiness. It was a lot of work and a lot of fun, but it kind of made me not feel like going to Carnival so much anymore. But I do go nuts for Pride events every year, even though I’ve been in the parade several times as well. I think it’s the crowd vibe. And I’m sure all those catholics despise-yet-obsess about all the flesh, but they can just go to confession later, no?

Have to out myself as a catholic who did not go to carnivale this year- went one of the first years I was here with some relatives far more famliiar w/ the mission, and we had some amazing food and margaritas and beer, all before 3pm, which just shot the day to hell for me. That memory alone has prevented me from going back- nothing about flesh nor confession!
