Bay Citizen announces launch date, asks community for $$

The Bay Citizen, the non-profit journalism 2.0 startup backed by Warren Hellman, has announced its news site will go live on May 26 with actual news.

The project is one of several non-profit journalism efforts in the Bay Area, as local author Frances Dinkelspiel wrote in the New York Times’ Bay Area coverage last week.

Formerly known as the Bay Area News Project, the endeavor originally planned to leverage content and staff from public radio/TV behemoth KQED, but the station dropped out of the project early this year. The Bay Citizen then signed an agreement with the New York Times to provide content to the national paper’s Bay Area coverage.

The Bay Citizen is inviting Bay Area residents to donate some dough to support community journalism. “Founding members” will be acknowledged on the project’s website and will be invited to a launch reception.

Nick’s Seashore Restaurant

We had been visiting up around the Strawberry area (101 and Seminary Dr.) yesterday. Coming back over the Golden Gate we kept commenting on how beautiful the city, the bay, and the ocean were. We decided to keep moving down the coast. By the time we found ourselves in Pacifica we were ready for lunch. We chose Nick’s at Rockaway Beach.

Ken had the Mixed Green Dinner Salad with Crab, and I had Fish & Chips. Our order came with a basket of tasty Garlic Bread. We were very pleased with our lunch and the service. Our waitress, Wanda, told us that in a few weeks the grey whales will be passing by, and we too will return.

Nick’s Seashore Restaurant
Open 7 days a week for Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
Only 15 minutes from downtown San Francisco.
Located just off of Coast Highway 1 @ Rockaway Beach, Pacifica.

It was a thrill to be front row when Cinequest presented Benjamin Bratt with the Maverick Spirit Award. We, the audience, were also entertained with a screening of “La Mission”. Benjamin and his brother worked together on “La Mission”. The film, set in the San Francisco Mission district, tells a story of intolerance and the love of family.

Carlos Santana: Mayor’s Art Award Winner

In January of ’09 I spotted Santana at SFO near a baggage carousel. Without hesitation I walked up to him. Handing him a Metblogs card I asked, “What would you like our readers to know?’ Graciously he spent time talking with me. I learned of his commitment to children, and that Carlos and his family established “The Milagro Foundation”.

On Thursday, March 18, 2010 Mayor Gavin Newsom will present Carlos Santana with the Mayor’s Art Award: “Carlos Santana is without a doubt one of San Francisco’s most beloved icons,” said Mayor Gavin Newsom. “When he burst onto the scene with his extraordinary new sound he solidified San Francisco’s position as one of the main stages in the history of rock ‘n’ roll. His music transcends not only musical genres, but also cultural, geographical and political boundaries, and he has brought millions of people together through his art. He is also an artist who gives back to his community. It is my great honor to present the 2010 Mayor’s Art Award to Carlos Santana for his commitment to improving the lives of others and for his tremendous contributions to music.”

Unfortunately, the event which is sponsored by the San Francisco Examiner is private. I believe that the city missed an opportunity. By opening the event to the public some serious money could have been raised – possibly for Mr. Santana’s foundation.
