What has undoubtedly become an SF institution for many is reaching the end of an era. After a week or so of first, shock, at the rumor that Fag Fridays was ending, came the gossip that it wasn’t ending entirely. But moving to a new location, possibly in the Mission. Now comes the news that Fag Fridays will indeed be resurrected at Pink. (I always enjoyed this space since back in its Liquid days, so it should be interesting.)

For many, Fag Fridays at The End Up defined a generation of club-goers in San Francisco, cranking out ’signature’ San Francisco deep house. It was my first exposure to that element of the city, so it still does make me instantly nostalgic. Unfortunately, my burnout level/attention span for that beat has always been sporadic, so I’ve never been among the most devoted attendees. Still, I would periodically nag myself that I really should do a pop-in since it is “classic gay San Francisco clubbing”. It has always been a comforting scene for the most part, so I never regretted it.

And ironically, I once facilitated a straight friend’s hook up on the dance floor back in the day. And not surprisingly, a couple of my homo own. [ahem] Interestly, that straight hook up that turned into quite a longterm relationship. Who knew? For a less tawdry look-back, SF Scene has a better, in-depth, gossipier update. Check it out. And fittingly, Juanita MORE! will be hosting its End Up closing night, October 12. And its relaunch the following Friday, the 19th. No doubt both nights will be beyond packed and extra sweaty.

Feel like having a four-legged fashion accessory for the upcoming weekend? As I’m sure some of you have already heard, the laughably “Web 2.0″ sounding company, FlexPetz is about to launch an SF location of their business. And I’m sure I’m not the only one who finds this utterly exploitive and despicable. (For a great, qualified rant, check out Tree Hugger’s recent article.) I know I’d kill to have a dog. But realize I currently can’t. Still, this? So, uhm… How about striking up new friendships with all the dog owners out there and becoming a doggy aunt or uncle? Or volunteering at a shelter or as a dog walker for PAWS? I can’t imagine how disorienting and emotionally up and down it is for these dogs. Or, in this town, how long it’s gonna take before some local group starts protesting them.

And that I’m actually tied up ( in a non-hot way). Sorry. Oopsie. Turns out, a truck ran over the fire hydrant in front of the apartment building he lives in. Instant Unfaithful. So like yeah, ta da. Of course, someone clocked it all on YouTube. (Bullseye to the impromtu soundrack btw.)

Cliff Notes: Despite the fact that 800 gallons of water poured onto the roof of his apartment building, nothing leaked through into his apartment. But there is water damage in the rest of the building. Good karma indeed!

As “Miss Thing, The Merciless”, she orchestrated a brilliant radio serial that saw fags, dykes, bears, twinks, radical fairies, sci-fi nerds, satin fetishists, 80’s hags, (and any non-Republican), all unite under one intergalactic rainbow. For the fate of the universe. Against an imperialist despot. Hmm. (Hush child, I’m talking about Dino De Laurentis.)

And they’ve flagged the most popular usual suspects. The cigarette butts are what personally annoy me the most. Most sidewalks (especially outside bars, clubs and restaurants) look like the aftermath of exploded nicotine piñatas. These are so absent-mindedly tossed onto the sidewalks by folks - who in the next smokily exhaled breath - will more than likely proclaim: “I never litter.” Uhm, ya just did. Thankfully, the often spotted downtown item at left is not among the top 12. [ick]

“The Dirty Dozen is the six most found items and six most found brands. In order of frequency, the top six items are gum, paper (receipts, napkins and newspapers), broken glass, plastic, candy wrappers, cigarette butts and empty cigarette packs. The top six brands are McDonalds, Muni transfers, Marlboro, Burger King, Starbucks, and, tied for sixth place, Safeway, FedEx, and Jack in the Box. Fast food restaurants account for the greatest amount of litter generated by the Dirty Dozen.”

I am sooooo glad I renewed mine a couple of years ago. The SF Passport Agency at Folsom and Hawthorne (btw 3rd & 2nd) has had lines down the block for most of the day, everyday for many many months now. Not surprisingly given the current chaos surrounding the issue, I even saw ABC 7 recording a piece there last month or so. (Can you imagine trekking all the way down from Ukiah to wait for 11 hours in this line?! Wah.) Even at lunch and the latter part of the afternoon, that line is snaking down the sidewalk. I work around the corner, and one morning a few months back, I had to be in the office for a very un-fun 6:45AM ‘conference call’. (Thank you east coast time people.) And yes, even at 6:30 in the morning, there were already people camped out with beach chairs by the glass doors. Not the vacation destination they initially envisioned, I’m sure.

(Apologies to those who may have to log in btw.) A friend of mine hosted his annual DM party at the corner of 18th & Guerrero. Since that’s right near where the parade kicks off, it’s the perfect vantage point to cheer on the women. It’s especially cool because everyone is still in the ‘excitement honeymoon’ phase. So when they look up and see all of us shouting at the top of our lungs with our signs, they go nuts. (I’m always blown away by the looks of sheer joy on those faces below.)

Now onto: “Funny But Bad Idea”. One tipsy young woman (not the one featured to the left, just so you know) had the naughty idea to write her cell number on one of the signs, instructing any hottie women out there to call her. Not surprisingly, she got 3 calls within the first 10 minutes. And obviously, there were many people below taking pictures of us as well. Thus behold the (literally) Sobering Power of Flickr. ‘Cuz like yeah, her phone number is now broadcast out there for all the world to see…and dial. I called this at the time, to no avail. So guess who’s probably gonna have to change her number really really soon? (No word of if she actually got any action though. At least that would make it partially worth it I guess.)
