Dressed to the nines, like a man in the old South, driving a cab which featured Polaroids of some of his favorite passengers with little gold stars all over them. So much better than sharing space with a crazy man on a phone/headset.

Staring at your calendar and lamenting the lack of public holidays in the next few months? Or just flat-out eager to have some sort of excuse to drink excessively? Don’t need one? In any case, St. Patrick’s Day is coming up, and Irish or not, it’s certainly worth celebrating (what, you hate Irish people?!). If you’re looking to seem less like an “amateur drinking night” afficionado and more like someone who appreciates the heritage-related hoopla, perhaps the parade is worth a look-see:

When — March 12, 2006, 11:30 a.m.
Where — 2nd and Market to Civic Center Plaza
Why — Because you’re really interested in Irish culture

Feeling extra-enthused? Check out the Irish Festival (same day as the parade) at Civic Center Plaza, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Fresh from its (former) home in Monterey, The Beat Museum opens in San Francisco tonight. In the event that you haven’t been to Monterey lately/have no idea what The Beat Museum is all about, details below:

What: The Beat Museum, opened by the folks from Kerouac.com in Monterey, CA in 2003. The mission of the museum? To tell the story of the Beat Generation to the new generation in particular, and to the general population as well. Authors featured in the museum include: Jack Kerouac, Charles Bukowski, William Burroughs, Neal Cassady, Gregory Corso, L. Ferlinghetti, Allen Ginsberg, John C. Holmes, LeRoi Jones, Bob Kaufman, Michael McClure, Gary Snyder, Alan Watts, Lew Welch and Philip Whalen. The museum staff encourages the study of beat themes, and what they mean to the world today.

When: Starting tonight — tentative hours are 1-8 p.m.

Where: 1345 Grant Avenue, SF

Why: Because you’re cultured, dammit!

As a Midwest born & bred San Francisco transplant, I find the concept of Christmas without snow a bit confusing. Which may be why I haven’t been full of holiday cheer this year. In an effort to reverse this mood (before the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future come to get me), I spent a bit of time today looking up holiday-related activities in the city…so put on your Santa hats (or yarmulkes!) and get out there! Ho ho hooooooooo!

Holiday Ice Skating at the Embarcadero Center (there’s a rink!) through January 1 (10 a.m. - 10 p.m. on weekdays, open until 11:30 p.m. on weekends)

Visit Union Square to see the purty tree & decorations

Metreon Center Winterland…apparently they make snow there once/hour? I might have to see this in person.

Feeling cold? Been poured on in the past week (although it has to be said - the thunderstorm was kind of fabulous)? Feeling distressed that California is not delivering on its good weather reputation? Look! There are SO many places where the weather is beyond hideous. Blowing out their proverbial candle - weather-style - should certainly make me feel like ours is glowing brighter. Temps below are the lows in the listed cities today. Feel better?

Chicago: 13
Detroit: 22
New York (not as bad as I thought): 31

And it rained in Seattle and Portland - so we have company.

As a social experiment (on myself), I have gone this entire week without listening to my iPod on the way to work. This has been torturous on many levels, not the least of which involves actual interaction with other people before I’ve had the chance to be awake-but-in-a-daze for at least an hour. This morning, though, I hopped on the N to make my way to work and thought, “this is going to be a great - though iPod-less - day”. Why did I think this? First, because the N drops me off soclose to my office that I can nearly sleepwalk there and second, because the crowd on the N is generally more entertaining than on any other train (save for the K during “leaving the club”) hours. This morning was no exception….although I do have to say that I prefer to see the folks on their way home from the Power Exchange. They smell better. But in any case, an overheard conversation from this morning is below, for your reading pleasure.

Man #1: So she doesn’t give a F(!) about me - or the 4 kids - she just likes the dogs.

Man #2: The dogs? They’re some ugly motherf…s!

Man #1: Man, and I was going to give them to you. She’s gonna kill ‘em!

Man #2: Kill the dogs? I thought she was going to kill the kids?

People begin staring…

Man #1: She gonna kill the kids, too. They’re big and fat and ugly and smell.

Man #2: But it ain’t their fault they smell - they on the street!

Man #1: Without saddles.

Man #2: I don’t know why you guys ever got horses in the first place.

(cut to: a group of people sitting near the two men trying to decide whether or not the horses were imaginary)
