This morning I found myself commuting to the city from the East Bay. I had done my home work the night before figuring out the logistics and the cost benefit of taking the AC Transit Line vs. Bart. I decided to take the NL line to enjoy the ride and views of the Bay Bridge instead of becoming another sardine in a packed Bart train. What I didn’t figure into my calculations was the option of casual car pool–only because I didn’t know anything about it. So as I was walking to the bus stop this morning, a car pulled up and the driver asked If I was interested in carpooling. I took a quick look and saw there was at least one female passenger and felt comfortable enough to hop in the backseat.

I felt like a fish out of water riding with two complete strangers. Not knowing carpool etiquette, I decided to remain quiet, observe the interaction between the driver and the other passenger and listen to their conversation. What I was able to figure out during the brief ride (which may not be news to anyone who’s tried this before) is the following:

1) Salutations–Greet your fellow passengers, it seems like this one would be obvious no?
2) Requests–Passengers are the co pilots here so making requests about the volume or radio stations or air conditioning is not welcome. Once again, seems obvious but I was surprised that the other passenger in the car actually made these requests.
3) Dating–Just because a passenger is in your car Mr. Driver, does not mean such passenger is interested in dating you. The free ride is great but you can’t honestly expect me to say yes to a date?!

This is based on my first experience, but there have to be other “rules” that apply. So if any of you have suggestions or if there’s some kind of Roberts rules of Order for carpooling, can you all share? I can get used to riding in a nice luxury car to work every day.

On a recent trip trip to SoCal, I met some bay area residents at a graduate school orientation. We were asked to introduce ourselves, give our little speech about why we wanted to go to that institution and identify which city we hailed from. When the two guys to my left both announced they were from San Francisco, I beemed with delight thinking I was on my way to making great local career connnections. We met up after the orientation and I was excited to learn which neighborhood they lived in and talk about this wonderful metropolis. Needless to say, when they said they were from the suburbs, my smile quickly faded. “Suburbs? Where specifically?” One of the guys responded, “oh from uh…from Concord.” I was half shocked and half angry because, Concord is NOT San Francisco.

Hey Mister, I pay a significant premium, perhaps foolishly to live in “the city” and call it my home. You do not get to say you live in San Francisco or even hail from San Francisco, when you’re more than 60 miles away and in a different county all together. Granted we were in SoCal and Concord isn’t exactly a place that most folks are familar with. In which case, saying you’re from the Bay Area would be acceptable. But I repeat, Concord is NOT San Francisco.

Have I become a SF snob or is there any merit to what I’m saying?

This lovely photo on the right is from his photo archive at nbc.com. He’ll be filming at the Orpheum Theatre April 30 to May 4. I am a fan of his self-deprecating sense of humor and have already requested tickets to the show. A friend mentioned he was coming, but it appears that preferential treatment is given to those actually living in the city so be sure to request the tickets sooner rather than later.

That’s right y’all, Dave Chappelle (Picture from Front Row King) was in town last night to perform at the Punchline comedy club. Tickets went on sale only two days in advance–and it didn’t take long for both shows to sell out. I intended to write about the event earlier this week but after realizing it may increase the number of people competing with me to get tickets, decided against it. I secured my tickets and arrived at 9:30, given that the show time was listed as 10pm. I should have known better.

The line was already around the building and doors didn’t open until 11pm, leaving some of us soaking in the rain. Security staff at the venue was a whole ‘nother story–don’t get me started on those buffoons. After a couple of good opening acts and enough time to dry off from the rain, Dave took over at midnight. He was scheduled to perform for one hour, but stayed on until 3:30am.

Did you read that–3:30AM! He should have left after the first hour because it went rather flat from there. He entertained questions from various hecklers and audience members to “squeeze every bit of laughter out of the crowd” before leaving. He managed to redeem himself in the last 30 minutes with the underlying themes of the evening; references to Spiderman, certain individuals in the crowd, sex and masturbation. His humor is not for everyone because he forces you out of your comfort zone–and he quickly picked up on those cues from the moans and jeers that came out now and then. But its exactly what our left of the middle, walk on eggshells, uber PC friendly city needs sometimes. Its exactly what we all need sometimes.

The restaurant industry is notorious for its failure rate versus other new businesses. So it was a delightful surprise to hear that AsiaSF, a groundbreaking establishment, has been around for over 8 years and continues to thrive. This place is a feast for the senses and would please Oscar Wilde to no end. I ended up there to celebrate a friends’ birthday party and was expecting a luscious dinner. What I wasn’t expecting was a packed restaurant and gender illusionists extraordinaire walking about on the top of the bar. I’m sure most of us have heard about AsiaSF, but all the reviews, comments, and word-of-mouth recommendations can’t compare to the real experience. It seems to be a hot spot for women in particular as there were three birthday parties and a bachelorette party to boot that Friday night. This restaurant definetly falls under the category of “only in San Francisco”. May you live long and thrive AsiaSF.

Both places serve some amazing dishes, however, the former provides a setting in which you can hear your partner while the latter is an ideal spot for checking out eye candy. Sean and Anna blogged about crowds at this place last summer when Italy and France were competing in the World Cup. Thankfully that’s not the norm, so you too can enjoy my favorite Italian joint in the city, hands down. Now if I only could make more money and afford to go there more often.

Whatever it is, Osha Thai restaurant has been buzzing in my last two visits. It’s a wonderful delight for those with dietary restrictions, whether vegetarian or diabetic or carnivore. The venue is perfect for large groups; however, if you’re a party of two looking for intimate conversation, this is not your place. I absolutely love the food, but I gotta be honest, the service leaves a lot to desire.
