There is something magical about abandoned buildings. When I was growing up in the East Bay, my father would often take my brother and I to Point Bonita to explore the old bunkers and gun emplacements. I have very fond memories of climbing through the bars and exploring the spooky cement structures that used to hold artillery and ammunition. I hadn’t been to Point Bonita in probably close to 20 years, but somehow I remembered exactly how to get there.

You are blessed with an amazing public transportation system. I live in Los Angeles, and our pubtrans is a bit… lacking. We have a massive and overly complicated bus system, and we have 4 light rail lines, none of which go as far as they should. You have transit lines that have been in operation for over 100 years… and they are fun. I really love the especially powerful electric motors and gearboxes that make up your cable car lines:

San Francisco is blessed with a magnificent skyline. The Bay Bridge to the East and the Golden Gate to the West make for a lovely frame to the glowing city in between. I really love SF, some day the wife and I plan on moving back up here, maybe once she is done with nursing school. Don’t get me wrong, LA is a fun city, but SF has a certain charm that calls me back when I’m away.

Growing up in the Bay Area, my two favorite weekend excursions where to the Exploratorium and the Lawrence Hall of Science. Last year when we were visiting family up here we stopped at Lawrence Hall for a few hours, and I must admit, it wasn’t anywhere near as interesting as it was when I was 10. Yesterday we hit the Exploratorium and it was even more interesting than when I was a kid. All the old exhibits that I fondly remembered are still there and of course many new ones as well. I brought my cameras and both Penelope and I took photos, her with the 30D and the 85mm f/1.2 L lens and me with the 5D and the 24-70 f/2.8 L on my trusty tripod. Check out the full set of my HDR Exploratorium photos.

At some point I am going to need to upload my photos, and the EDGE network is not going to cut it. Where in SF can I get free and fast WiFi? I thought I read something about google doing a wireless network somewhere around the city. Actually a wired connection would work, as long as it is fast. If all else fails, I’m sure there are a couple of internet cafe’s with good fast connections. My server sits on a 100Mbit connection in Downtown LA, so the fatter the <del>pipe</del> tube the better.

The wife and I are on vacation in your lovely city for the week. We mostly avoided the whole gift giving thing for Christmas this year, opting for a smattering of stocking stuffers and saving our money for a vacation to our second favorite city in California. I actually grew up in the East Bay (Lafayette) and moved away to Santa Fe half way through the 8th grade.

As this trip is a present, we are splurging on one of our favorite indulgences, fine dining. We’ve budgeted a few hundred bucks a day for food and we want to experience a wide range of culinary delights, of which there are no shortage of in San Fran. I posted a RFR (Request For Reccomendations) on Chowhound, and last night, after checking in to our hotel, we ate at Perbacco, which was excellent.

Another facet of our vacation is photography. I am planning on doing more HDR photography around SF. Last year before our wedding we took a trip up here and I did a bit of shooting, but this year I’m going all out.
