A Giant Sucking Sound: Swept by LA, Bonds drops F-bomb
The week of good feeling around the All Star Game, the tribute to Willie Mays, Barry Bonds’ valedictory election to the starting lineup, and the line of charm he dropped on the national press ended yesterday in the worst possible way: a three-game sweep by the Dodgers at home, and Bonds dropping the F-bomb on local press. Asking for his reaction to the sweep and to going 0 for his last 20 at-bats, the reporters found the charm tap in the off position:
Yeah, it’s an embarrassment for me to be wearing this fucking uniform because of the way I’m playing. Now go away.
That’s from this morning’s SF Chronicle, but the quote was being played incessantly on the Giants’ flagship station KNBR 680 AM — if you turn it on now, you can probably still hear it. They’re running it like every five minutes.
Let’s break down that ejaculation after the jump.
To me, it sounds like Bonds is blaming both himself — “the way I’m playing” — as well as the whole team — “embarrassed to be wearing this fucking uniform.” True, the sweep by the Dodgers was a team effort. The perfect example of the team’s failure comes in the performance yesterday of Dave Roberts. He went 3 for 5 — but when he came up with the bases loaded and two outs in the 8th inning, he struck out. For the Giants, whose failure to score runners in scoring position has been the bane of their season, there couldn’t have been a more fitting ending to the game.
Oh, wait. There was. The Giants went 1-2-3 in the 9th, and popping out weakly to end it all was, yes, Bonds.
Here’s more from the Mercury News, plus an excellent analysis column by their Tim Kawakami. And, for a change of pace, how about the Toronto Globe and Mail? Yeah, they had somebody there. Their story is headed “Chasing Aaron;” perhaps the Canadian will accompany the team until Bonds hits no. 756. Well, I guess it’s better than sitting in Baghdad waiting for the U.S. to win the war.
Now about that fire sale…
