Bye Barleycorn?
Went to the SF Appreciation Party’s party for the John Barleycorn last night. My friend Mary was on the cover of SF Daily, so she told me about it- and it was fun in a kind of scary morose way. The Barleycorn, to me, is one of those funky SF establishments, like Vesuvius’ or Specs, the Musee Mchanique, or the Wave Organ. Sad that it’s not preserved in some kind of “funky SF local” category. Coalition organizer Tony told me that even St. Brigid’s had an issue getting preserved, despite its 200 year old history. Anyway, tons of cool performers- including Beth Lisick- and da Mayor and Aaron Peskin were there too. Had an interesting chat with Willie re: Josh Wolf. Anyway, if you’re interested in preserving the ‘Corn add your name to the petition! (will update with link- email info@savebarleycorn.org in the meantime.)

Is it being threatened due to demolition? or losing it’s lease?
The Barleycorn showcases an amazing structure of a bar, overscaled for the size of the space, definately, but cool and funky and odd, all at the same time.
I used to live literally around the corner, and while I was never a ‘regular’, whenever I did stop in, it was a memorable experience of chatting with the bartender and engaging with those who DID call the bar home.
Losing its lease.
the web site has a realy nice “stories at the barleycorn” section.
