Stupid idea of the month: A’s move to Fremont
Gwen Knapp of the Chronicle has a great column today on the proposed move of the Oakland A’s to a grassy spot in the middle of nowhere, otherwise known as 4 miles away from the end of the BART line. Along the way, she offers tales of other impossible-to-reach stadiums, including a colorful scene where riders stuck in a bus on their way to a Denver Broncos game “abandoned ship in the middle of an overpass, then climbed under a cyclone fence and slid en masse on their backsides down a snow-covered hill into the Broncos’ parking lot.”
Note: there will be no snow in Fremont.
Just in: the AP is quoting Fremont city officials as saying it’s a done deal. Uh huh.
Read other Chronicle coverage of the proposed move of the only professional baseball team between San Francisco and Denver: Matier and Ross on Nov. 7 (was anybody paying attention to sports on Tuesday?) as well as SFGATE’s Vlae Kershner blogging the next day (ditto).

And speaking of stadiums (stadia?), the San Francisco Olympic organizing committee was agog over an announcement by the 49ers to leave Candlestick for Santa Clara. Seems the Oly people were counting on the 49ers to build a brand spanking new stadium that would also serve as Olympic HQ. Whoops!
