The “love” isn’t just for parks
You’ve probably seen the Love Your Parks promos all over the city, especially on buses. Personally, I think it is one kick ass marketing scheme as I moved to SF mainly for the green space. The campaign is to help raise money for the San Francisco Parks Trust. I recently found out about a little known partner of theirs, called Plant*SF.
More about neighborhoods than open space, Plant*SF promotes and helps to install permeable gardens in rarely-used sidewalk spaces. The current have over 10 projects in the works, at least we know that the city is paying attention. When I first moved here, I was surprised by how much sidewalk there really is in the city. You could easily fit six to seven people side-by-side on some of these spaces. Where are the trees, the grass, or the plants?
Plant*SF isn’t just some random fundraising project; they actually tell you how to make this happen in your own neighborhood, on your own sidewalk. From the forms you need for a sidewalk permit and costs to suggested plants, gardeners, and how to borrow tools from the city - all you need is right here. I’m tempted to try and install one on 34th Ave, what do you think?
