House committee lasers Giants management
While most of the Bay Area was masturbating over MacWorld product announcements, baseball commissioner Bud Selig was getting french-fried by Rep. Henry Waxman (D. - Calif) over the Mitchell Report’s revelations that the management of the San Franicisco Giants knew about Barry Bonds’ steroids use and did nothing.
Waxman’s House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform held hearings today on the Mitchell Report’s findings. His opening statement called out Giants management by name — after the jump.
From the opening statement by Rep. Waxman:
The Mitchell report also recounts the efforts of Stan Conte, the chief trainer for the San Francisco Giants, to remove Greg Anderson from the Giant’s clubhouse. Mr. Anderson was Barry Bonds’ personal trainer. The different approaches taken by Mr. Conte, the Giants general manager Brian Sabean, and the Giants president, Peter Magowan, are a sad reflection of the poor leadership many teams brought to this effort.
Waxman went on to question Selig about the accountability of Giants management in the matter:
It’s possible the BALCO scandal could have been averted if Brian Sabean and Peter Magowan acted in a responsible fashion,. Instead they seemed more intent on protecting Barry Bonds and it seems clear that Brian Sabean violated baseball rules by failing to report information about alleged steroid use to the commissioner’s office.
Selig’s reply gives a great deal of insight into how he could have let this all happen: “It’s one of many matters under review.” What style.
