SF’s new millionaire: author Josh Bazell

author Josh BazellRecently minted MD Josh Bazell, who works in UCSF’s Department of Psychiatry, got a “seven figure” deal for his debut novel “Beat the Reaper” (courtesy Publisher’s Marketplace), described as “a dark comedy thriller featuring a young, highly competent doctor named Pietro Brwna who is also a former hitman for the New Jersey mafia.”

Presumably the “young, highly competent doctor” part is autobiographical; here’s an online newsletter from the Columbia Med School with a condensed version of his remarks to his med school class (about halfway through the page). As for the former hitman part, Bazell must have been exposed to the underbelly of East Coast life as “an investigator of suspicious deaths for the Chief Medical Examiner of the City of New York.”

Local writer Frances Dinkelspiel has more local book deals in her blog.
