Riding the new hybrid Muni bus

muni_hybrid.jpg
On Saturday morning I found one of Muni’s new hybrid buses pulling up to my stop.

According to Muni’s page, there are 86 hybrid buses in the fleet. Somewhat misleadingly, they say “Electric Powered” on the side by the front door.

The almost still-new bus was comfortable, the ride a little smoother, and somewhat quieter than a regular diesel bus — but not completely without engine noise. The rear seating area is raised, while the main deck is much closer to the street than older buses.

There are no rear steps — just a platform. But because the deck of the bus is much lower than the buses you’re used to, you’re much closer to the street.

nice. cool bus. reminds me of the kind of bus i’ve seen in other countries (denmark, other euro countries), but i never noticed if they were hybrids.

but in keeping with the true muni experience, was the driver rude and did s/he make an unauthorized stop to buy some donuts?

Let the woman buy her donuts. Everyone needs a donut break. With sprinkles.

Was just in NYC and realized that the new hybrids are dead-ringers for the buses used in NYC. Almost identical except for the interior color scheme. In case anyone was wondering…
