Newsom addresses Muni problems as new line opens

20line_sm.gifAs San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom held a public forum to address Muni’s shortcomings, the transit agency started new service including a new 20-Columbus line to replace the 15-Third St. line. That route was canceled in April because the new T-Third streetcar line was supposed to make it irrelevant.

To Muni’s surprise, people still wanted to go from South of Market to North Beach and still avoid the 30-Stockton. So the 20-Columbus line was quickly conceived. Click the graphic above for a look at the route, or go here for the complete image.

Only until 4? I miss being able to get on the 15 at Washington Square and take it all the way to South Park.

PJ: The 20 seems to be running the most popular part of the 41-Union’s downtown route, so just board a 41 during rush hours.

Well, the 20 was just a way to get North Beach residents to Downtown because they cannot stand the wait through Chinatown. It takes the 41 route to Downtown and the 30 route to Galileo because it would cost a bit of money to raise wires on Sansome and Powell. I’m sure some people would not have been happy to see a “new” diesel line running, but some others would not be happy either to see new trolley wires running through their neighborhood.
