Overheard F Market
Which is worse – preteen conversations on cell phones, or two old transit geeks?
Six teens from Marin were on their cell phones, swapping them back and forth, all in the same uniform: tank top, jeans, and flip flops. Lots of sullen discussion about Pier 39 and whether some guy on the phone was at PacBell Park (or AT & T park?). The entire 25 minute ride from Ferry Building to Pier39 consisted of this one nugget of information about this guy. They were drawling and sighing, pouting and posing so much that they couldn’t convey basic information.
Contrast two guys in NY sports-team hats that lived in SF and knew basically everything about municipal transit. They were in their 60s and 80s respectively. Lots of discussion about who would drive a limo to Pier39 (consensus was someone who was wealthy and having a funeral (??)). Each tram stop merited an elaborate discussion on the connecting lines, the design of the stop and past stops and connecting lines.
I couldn’t figure out which was more excruciating. Now, I share the joy with you. Ha! I felt sorry for the driver.
This is why God created the Sony Walkman and all subsequent personal stereo devices.
zzzzzZZZZZZZZ…
So this is what I’m missing out on when blasting my iPod. Oh good.
