Massive Tag in Upper Haight

I took this Sunday in the aftermath of the Haight Street Fair — it’s the old Gap building, and the tag is so big it wraps around the corner. A local told me it went up sometime Friday night. Anyone know anything about it, like what it says? Also, anyone know what’s going to happen with that space (corner of Haight and Ashbury)?

I saw that tagging underway about 10 PM on Friday Night. Being inherently evil, I immediately called the Park Police Station to call it in. The police called me about a few minutes later to tell me that the tagging had been commissioned by the building Owner.

RE Retail Space: There is a small article about the new retail tenant in the current issue of the hard to find free Haight-Ashbury newspaper. A clothing manufacturer called RMP or something similar is planning to open their second real brick and mortar store. The clothing line is apparently already sold in multiple shops in the Haight.

That being said, the newspapers website has a posting that an “artist” has rented the space:

Perhpas the same one who either commissioned, or crafted the tag.

It’s for a new RVCA store.

“AMAZE just did a HUGE piece. If you’ve never been to the Haight, this hit is HUGE. Check out how tiny the garbage can is. I remember when we used to cruise around in AMAZE’s VW and then my VW bus. As a matter of fact, Twist used to have a VW bus as well. That store is the new RVCA store opening soon.”

Amaze: Much props and respect to a oldskool king, loved in the ‘Sco, known around the world.

Redseca2, you snitch: I hope you get struck by a train.

I heard that a Brooks Brothers was going into that spot, but my source has been unreliable in the past.

Wow. Nice. Resident sees vandalism, cares about neighborhood, reports it. And the fair karma-pay back for that: getting struck by a train?

Any vandal takes his/her chances when practicing his/her craft. Would it be as ‘oooh – look at me’ edgy if it were permissible? No. Wouldn’t be much of anything. Isn’t beating the fuzz part of the draw.

Of course in this case, since it was reportedly, done with permission, doesn’t really matter in the long run anyway, right?

too bad, I wish I had seen the person tagging, it is too bad, that someone has to write graffiti, do these thugs write things on their walls, not everyone likes it. it is sad to see that people woh report things like this to the police are rediculed. sad, sad. if someone is going to do this, at least make it tasteful, such as a murial. U think?

For the record, that’s not “tagging,” that’s “piecing.” If you don’t know the difference, you might find it edifying to spend some time learning about the topic. Assuming that anybody painting on a wall or with a spraycan is doing something illegal or commiting vandalism is assumptive and bigoted asshatery.

It’s amazingly beautiful! I love it! Wish there was more, all around town. There are so many unloved walls and fences just THINK of the art that could be there!

Most people just don’t get it. Props to Liz and no bumps for snitches. Where do you whiners think you live? Kennebunkport? Pls return there ASAP, visual boredom awaits.

Actually, I the snitch have lived directly across the street from the tag-piece-graffiti since 1979. I moved in about three months after I got my head smashed by the cops on White Night, and I do have a say in my environment.

The irony is that at least some of the pro graffiti posters DO live in Kennebunkport, the east bay, or wherever and have no problem owing and awing over something they only see on Firday night.

I’ve been here a while, too. That doesn’t mean shit.
Maybe you havent recovered from that blow. Congrats for being at that particular riot.
That and $3.25 will buy you a cup of coffee.
Why do you drop a dime to The Man who cracked your skull so they can crack another – an artist no less – without knowing what the hell is going on first? Did the head injury succeed in turning you into a sheep who bleets to the cops every time you think you see a wolf because an artist is wearing wolf’s clothing? Save you dimes for something that is hurting someone…this legal piece does quite the opposite. Please continue to clown yourself…

    sf since 86:

Like I said, I have to look at it every day. After awhile, it is just someone’s arrogance, and I would certainly call next time too.

  19. SF since 86 (unregistered) on June 20th, 2007 @ 7:41 pm

What about the corporoate arrogance you’ve been forced to see out your window as long has Gap has had that bldg and been blasting their unwanted images at you? Huh? “Oh it’s OK they PAID for it”.
I wont even go into how the Fisher family cut down a bunch or their (property) North Coast redwoods against this will of 10s of thousands of petitioners – THAT’S arrogance, Mr. bitch.

Do you not understand that you ARE seeing a paid advertisement?

Are you just not into seeing something different?
    (in the haight!?)
Do you call the cops whenever something different appears? (in the hate?!)
How the fuck can you live in the haight?!
The Amaze throwup will probably be gone as soon as RVCA opens…hopefully they keep up this kind of thing.

If only to annoy douchebags like you.

you know what…nevermind…I just read more carefully what you wrote before(last paragraph) makes little sense and I should probably not pick on you. It’s not fair – I’m out, sorry I said mean stuff…hang in there and try to keep an open mind.\\peace
