Bay Bridge Commute

Bridge I have been asked a few times how the commute SF->Emeryville** is, so I thought I’d share. Granted, I go off hours. Still, it sucked on Friday.

There was a random slow down going through the tunnel, and inexplicably there was just more cars, around noon. Then as we approached the maze, cars kept inching towards the cement barriers of 580 like they might find some magical opening. Why couldn’t they just make these navigation decisions earlier, like on the 5 miles of decisionless bridge driving they just finished? Merging onto 1-80 North was far more crowded and slower too. This was the 5th day since the collapse so perhaps more drivers, like me, were going back to old patterns. The first day after the collapse, the bridge was really, really empty.

Glad the federal govt. has deemed the maze one of 5 top commuting arteries in the nation.* It’s been fearsome my entire life. Once got lost in the maze, pulled over, and called an ex boyfriend who lived at Lake Merritt to navigate me out of there. The first time I drove through the maze directly without having to do two more cloverleafs, when I was 16, was a cause for celebration!

** yes, through my own lack of planning I had to drive over twice this week!
* I heard this last night on TV but can’t find the article- here is a similar report.
