Downtown Craft: ArtFibers
Usually I head to Craft Gym to get a craft fix, but the other day I was doing bank errands and completely forgot until I stumbled upon it, that there was this gem of a yarn store downtown: ArtFibers. I went there a few years ago and was mad because the lady who owned it wouldn’t let us knit in store. I decided to try it again- and things have changed.
I was told that I could sample out some yarn before I made an investment- they have balls of extra yarn- and the stuff here was wonderful to touch and actually viable & practical to make your project, vs. just artsy and cool. Ended up buying raw silk! Nice. Classic city place- go up a non-descript beige stairwell next to a flashy retail front, take the elevator- next floor up is a mani-pedi, and you’re in a windowless room with lots of yarn, and lots of quiet, studious craft enthusiasts. I managed to buy some good stuff with phone assistance from my Mom. They have a wall of local artisans and projects they’ve done, and in one, Beyonce was modelling some nifty crocheted sweater.
My project is a purple & green & white (odd, I know) afghan. I also like ImagiKnit in the Castro.
