Page Street Fire Update: Arsonist Arrested

52pagest.jpgThe fire in Hayes Valley that I reported the other day has been determined as intentionally set by a tenant. Last night, the suspect was arrested at the UCSF Medical Center after he checked himself in.

The suspect was identified as artist Silver Warner (known for his photography of bicycle culture in SF), who was released on Monday morning from SF General after a bizarre incident on Sunday, as stated in the Chron:

At around noon on Sunday, Silver Warner walked down to take the trash out but disappeared, his father said. Close to midnight, a neighbor reported that he had returned and was wearing only his underwear and banging on the door. His hands were bleeding. He was taken to San Francisco General and held there. His girlfriend was told early Monday that she could pick him up at 9 a.m. that day, but when she arrived, he had already been released, the father said.

Warner had apparently set fire to his apartment when his girlfriend and father had momentarily left to discuss how to handle him in his fragile mental state. He had been taking mushrooms and was full of paranoia about snipers and “bad spirits” in his apartment.

I knew him ..used to live with with him near Washington sq. park , we were both bike messengers ..A very calm friendly guy , very humble and sweet . He was into graffiti , SO i took him to the amtrak tunnels in hells kitchen .One night we got busted near Broadway in SOHO , for painting . The dude made friends with everyone in the jail , and when he told people his tag name , everyone was like” Damn , that’s you”. I think at one point he had the most stickers and small tags in lower Manhattan .
We went down to the court together and both ended up having to do community service up on riverside park in Harlem , cleaning up dog shit and the likes on a hot summer day . We had an old cool black dude watching us and driving us around in his huge garbage truck , with a stuffed carebear , tied to the front . He knew we were into graffiti , and when lunch time came around , he told us a way to get into the freedom tunnels , so we went .For me it was like a dream to finally see those tunnels , and I remember sharing that moment with Silver , with big eyes , seeing old tags from gone writers. And pulling out my drippy mop marker and busting some tags while on community service …..great memories.
At one point there wasn’t a phone box you could go to , with out seeing him up ..He was always a mysterious fellow to me , I think it was his calmness , that made me always curious about him . Right before I left for L.A , we got into some small fights …And I never heard from him again.

Silver never would have hurt anyone or anything. He is a very caring and sensitive individual.
IF the fire started in his apartment, it was an ACCIDENT. NOT,INTENTIONAL.
    This does suck.
Any suggestions on how to help him ?

ive known silver all my life (31 yrs)my mom and his mom were best friends before we were even born.on weekends we would always get together moms would party and we would play hot lava or tag or anything until we passed out. he even taught me how to ride a bike at age 9.he was like my brother up till we were teens then a bombshell happened his mom passed. everyone was so hurt. we spent a little time 2gether but then everything just stopped he moved and i was doin my own thing. i guess i never relized how much he was hurting i feel so bad that we didnt stay in contact. silver is such a good person he would never knowingly try to hurt anyone.
