Happy Birthday, Dave Eggers
Today is the birthday of Dave Eggers, writer, editor of McSweeney’s and co-founder of 826 Valencia, the infamous writing center/pirate supply store in the Mission.
Although Eggers is not a SF native (he was born in Boston, raised in Illinois and moved to SF when he was 21 years old), he’s most certainly an essential fixture in SF culture. His book, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, is an autobiographical (although embellished) chronicle of his move to the Bay Area with his siblings after both of his parents died of cancer. This memoir has been quintessential for many Generation X-ers, in San Francisco and beyond.
Happy Birthday, Mr. Eggers!

He was featured on “Writer’s Almanac with Garrison Kiellor” this morning too.
