16th & Mission = Dante’s Inferno

Well anyone whose been to that location either day or night might agree there’s more than a few similarities. This weekend it’s accurate because a new “live action graphic novel ” called Dante’s Inferno is appearing as part of SF Indie Fest at a certain establishment on that corner.

The venue I speak of is the venerable vaudeville era throwback known as The Victoria Theater where filmmaker Paul Zaloom will be doing some Q&A as well this Sunday after his screening that starts at noon. Zaloom has turned this disturbing classic literature into an even more disturbing portrayal using intricately hand drawn paper puppets show and fair to say it has to be seen to be believed.

The Friday night premiere screening of this flick was one of the most talked about film’s so far of the SF indie fest slate and in Park City this year, so don’t miss it…

Synopsis & trailer etc after the jump

What is Dante’s Inferno?

It’s a tale that has been kicking around the cultural playground for over 700 years, and Hollywood has sort of left it alone. At least we can say it has never before been interpreted quite like this. With characters voiced by noted actors James Cromwell and Dermot Mulroney, they are brought to life using purely hand-made special effects and somewhat primitive but captivating animation techniques.

Viewers revisit a literary classic, retold in a kind of apocalyptic Victorian-era toy theater. Dante’s Hell is brought to lurid 3-dimensional, high-definition life in a darkly comedic travelogue of the underworld — set against an all-too-familiar urban backdrop of used car lots, gated communities, strip malls, and the U.S. Capitol. And populated with a contemporary cast of reprobates, including famous — and infamous — politicians, presidents, popes, pimps. And the Prince of Darkness himself.
