El Mariachi Real

RomanticoFamilyVirgin.jpgMany of us take for granted the touches that make the San Francisco experience diverse and colorful. Ever wonder about the mariachis that roam the streets of the Mission District, playing taqueria after taqueria for tips?

The film Romantico follows one such musician, Carmelo Muniz Sanchez, who has spent several years in SF playing music to support his family back in Mexico. The filmmakers follow him on a return visit to his hometown to reunite with his family, including his mother who has fallen ill. What he finds back home is a struggle to support his family and a decision of whether to return to the US or not.

I am intrigued by a personal story such as this and look forward to seeing this film. It’s an opportunity to learn one of many stories that our city holds.

Romantico is currently playing at the Landmark Opera Plaza Cinema.
