A job’s a job
After figures came out showing an increase in 2006 on attacks on San Francisco’s parking control officers — better known as meter maids, no matter their gender — the New York Times published a prominent feature on Jan. 6 (r.r.), “San Franciscans Hurl Their Rage at Parking Patrol.” The Examiner followed up last week with a piece suggesting Fear of attack may be hurting productivity for the Cushman-driving squadron.
Today two more prominent articles came out.
The LA Times follows the NT Times’ lead in reporting the increase in parking ticket rage against meter maids, including the news that State Sen. Mark Leno is introducing a bill to make attacks on them a felony. Finally, the Chronicle reported today: Supes shocked to learn parking meters bringing in millions less than expected. Seems the meters are hardly worth it, pulling in an average of less than $6 a day each.

Did you read yesterday’s Matier & Ross, near the bottom, about what the average take is from a downtown meter? $2.61! Funny quote from Super McGoldrick: “”Heck, if we got it up to a 50 percent collection rate, we could offer free massages on the buses,” McGoldrick said.”

Even if the meters only collect an average of 6 bucks a day, the tickets help make it worthwhile.
