Google snatches up GAP office space
Proving you can’t out speculate the speculators, in a move that surely dissapoints local porn kingpins, The GAP is subleasing 210,000 sq ft of their prime waterfront real estate to none other than Google. While the retailer seeks a buyer for it’s struggling clothing empire, dot com kings searching for SF digs have found 345 Spear for around $35 a square foot…
SF Business Journal reports that the $21 Million dollar deal covers the second, third, and fourth floors at 345 Spear, and expires in 2010.
It could mean good news for nearby restaurants like Chaya, One Market and I guess Starbuck’s since some 900 Google employees have become millionaires over the past few years and might have dough to drop on expensive French/Asian cuisine and even Frappucino.

This is good news. I think Google is a lot more hip than GAP anyway and would love to see them move into that iconic building.
It’s worth pointing out that Google employees get free food at the Amphitheatre Technology Complex cafe in Mountain View, so it is possible that the local restaurants will not see much difference in business if Google creates another free cafe in their new SF digs.
Unless I am mistaken, the “iconic” Gap building is the one at 2 Folsom. Google is moving into 345 Spear– across the street.
Whoa, good post!
Matt- thanks for the claificaiton. For some reason I really love the GAP headquarters building, looks great from the water
The office space was previously used by GAP’s Old Navy division …
