SO THANKFUL that his wife and kids are safe. James Kim is still missing; he went off looking for help two days ago. Hoping very very very hard that he’ll be found soon too.
The article on CNET is good- I was getting all weepy. Coworkers & me here (kodak) are rooting for James too.
Okay, I’m pretty freaked out over this whole story, because a) I’ve done the Portland to SF route a few times, and there are places that are tricky even in the BEST of conditions, and b) I’ve taken enough disaster training to think that I’D be the one to trek out on showshoes, so I’m definately feeling for James. I’ve already mentally amended my ‘must pack’ list for the winter camping trip I’m planning for the break between Xmas and NYE. and a flare gun is now at the top of the list.
I’m watching, and hoping for the very, very best.
Good news, I hope Kim is going to be found soon too, because his family needs him so.
I hope they can have their x-mas party all together.
Thank you for sharing this good news with me !
Google maps is somewhat responsible for this, considering that’s where they got their route information. Hopefully this will force Google to update their directions on a daily basis to provide the safest information on weather conditions and whether or not a certain route will even be POSSIBLE to travel through! From what I’ve read, Bear Camp Road is a tiny little off- chute logging road off the main highways that is very dangerous to the average driver. Oregon is not a safe place to drive through at all. Thoughts?
I read that a tourist stop - chamber of commerce- in Portland referred to this as a possible route, even as “scenic”, so spread the blame around.
I’ve backpacked in this area (ages ago) and we were stuck in a rainstorm- which was par for the course really, even in summer.
I hope they can follow his trail. I’m checking news now hourly to find out.
Sad news–body of Mr. Kim found.
