Theater: Edward Scissorhands

Went to see Edward Scissorhands today at the behest of a friend. I had just glanced at a review this weekend so didn’t really know what to expect. I was arguing with my sister about whether the movie was a Classic the other day, and so I was surprised and pleased to hear that it was actually made into a musical. Sitting there, in the lobby of the Orpheum drinking an 8$ Irish Coffee, (supporting the arts!) I wondered how they would do the topiaries, the magical transitions, and all that stuff that is so easy in film. Well, it was great. I really enjoyed it, and the score is amazing. Just so you know- I hate Andrew Lloyd Webber- and that’s what I feared. But it was a funny, well choreographed, beautiful score, and visually stunning. No speaking or singing, if you care. Favorite scene was a dance in the topiary, where Edward and love interest dance among a bunch of dancing shrubs. OK that sounds weird, but it really worked. And how is this sad story funny, you ask? The body language of the townspeople cracked me up- is all.

No singing in a musical? How does that work? Was it just a ballet or something?

Yeah, it was a musical without voice. Not sure why it wasn’t called a ballet- maybe a marketing thing?
