Ritual sacrifice, with pie

A year or two ago I was down at the Castro Safeway on the day before Thanksgiving, picking up some last minute cranberry-walnut pie ingredients with my partner. The place was a madhouse. Lines stretching for miles. People screaming at each other. Panicked shoppers sprinting down the aisles to fight over the last can of pumpkin pie filling. Dogs and cats living together–mass hysteria!

In the baking aisle, I overheard:

Fashionable man talking loudly into cellphone: Okay. Okay. They are out of flour. No flour. Can I just use Jiffy mix? is Jiffy mix the same thing?

And then he picked up the Jiffy and left. I really wonder how his baking turned out.

We were there to get cranberries and brown sugar, and they were all out of sugar. We ended up finding some in the fruit section, next to the bagged cranberries. So a word of warning folks: get your ingredients early, because Wednesday night is way too late.
