49ers say fans would be ‘frightened’ by garage

I’m not a football fan, and I don’t really care where the 49ers play, Candlestick or Cancun. But this whole stadium story is just a gift that keeps on giving.

Today a team spokesman, reacting to the city’s proposal for a Candlestick project that would rival Disney World, featuring housing, shopping malls, a hotel and, oh yeah, a football stadium, said the whole thing was a non-starter. Why? Because of the prospect of being “terrified.”

Just what is it that the team is sure will strike terror into the heart of their fans?

A parking garage.

And when it comes to a 9,300-space garage where fans would park for games, MacNeil said it’s “not going to happen” and that 49ers fans were “frightened” by the concept.

“The idea of being in a big garage, stuck in traffic, surrounded by other cars that are idling was not something our fans were particularly interested in,” he said. “We’re looking to break new ground on the stadium. But we’re not looking to terrify our fans.”

Perhaps he’s been to Whole Foods this week. I was there around 7:30 tonight, and the cars circling the tiny parking garage above the store on 4th and Harrison were like moths around a flame. I waited 20 minutes before I got a space.

But I wasn’t “frightened.” Just what kind of pussies do the 49ers think their fans are?

I think they want a parking lot instead of a parking garage is so that the fans will have somewhere to tailgate at. Then again I saw some sketches of proposed plans on ch7 tonight and it looks like there is plenty of green space near the stadium to bbq all you want.

    Yes — but “frightened”? “Terrified”?

Went to a game in Seattle last year and thought it was kind of cool seeing people tailgating in a parking garage. I can’t remember if there were bbq’s lit up or not but there was plenty of other clandestine activity going on in the dark recesses of that garage.

Regardless, this is a load of shit from the Yorks. They could give a shit about the fans, and to say that the fans would be frightened shows how completely disconnected the Yorks are from the people that butter their bread.
