Sunday Movies: Sholay

Like Kathryn’s post, if I wasn’t bound by duty today- to go to Cupertino of all things- I would go see the South Asian Film Festival’s Sholay. As a friend was describing to me last night: “Everyone in India - five or so years younger than us to our age- can quote lines from Sholay, like, like, we know every line in Star Wars: ‘That’s not a moon’…” Also it is the debut of Amitabh Bachcha, the granddaddy of Bollywood. In the picture, he’s the fellow to our left. Last night went to KANK (initials of KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA (KANK/Never Say Goodbye)). Really fun to see at the Castro as well- lots of crying and plaintive soundtrack, with the audience hooting and hollering at the funny cuts or cameos. You should go to some restaurant on Church St. first then run up to the Castro and stand in line for good seats- buy tickets online first of course- and that would make a good night!

Thanks for making reference to my post and expanding on that particular part of it. There’s always so much going on here that I sometimes feel like I just barely scratch the surface of all that I would like to share with other people! The film festival does sound delightful …

Nasmaste. I think today’s movie is at the Roxie in the Mission. That’s what the festival web pages say anyway. There’s also no online sales today; they ended Friday.

It’s a fine line between “Bachcha” and “Bachan”.
“baccha” is a world for child, but also often used
in swearing along the lines of “son of a bitch”.

BTW, Sholay is allegedly being remade.
