49ers are moving too!

Quite a day for Bay Area sports. As Mark Pritchard posted earlier, the A’s are moving to Fremont. Now the San Francisco 49ers say they’re moving to Santa Clara. San Francisco will not give them what they want, so they’re moving. They don’t seem to realize that it’s a two-way street and that perhaps if they won more games the city might take their demands more seriously.

So since Santa Clara is practically San Jose in geographic terms, will the name have to change? Might I suggest something that reflects the area’s origin the way the name “forty-niners” honors San Francisco’s history? Like, say, the Silicon Valley Microchips? Yeah, I think it’s ridiculous too. It’s like K-Fed filing divorce against Britney (instead of the other way around).

I’ve heard the NY Jets/NY Giants thing mentioned several times already, about how the stadium is in a “completely different state” (ABC 7, 6:00pm newscast). Seriously, East Rutherford, NJ is really not that far from NYC at all. It’s like a 20 minute drive. Santa Clara is nearly an hour. States on the east coast are much smaller than they are on the west coast. You can drive through 3 or 4 of them in under 4 hours.

I love the quote from SFGate that, “Parking will not be an issue in Santa Clara, said Vice Mayor Kevin Moore.”

Yeah, because no one’s gonna drive down to San Jose to watch the awful Niners!!!

I can see the marquee now:
    SANTA CLARA FACEBOOK.COM STADIUM
    TONIGHT AND TOMORROW ONLY!!!
    K-FED
    opener: papa roach

    **tumbleweed enters, stage right.

If there’s a name change, it’ll be the city identification, not the nickname. “49ers” is as much a regional thing as it is an S.F. thing.

Yeah I was pretty much joking. But Santa Clara 49ers sounds as lame as Santa Clara Microchips.

If there can be a Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, there can be a San Francisco 49ers of Santa Clara.

It will not happen. San Francisco is a world renown city. Santa Clara is known as a town in the San Jose vicinity which is south of San Francisco. If they ever move I can see the newspapers proclaiming the Santa Clara Forty-Niners Super Bowl Champions and the world TV audience saying “where?”

If you are upset with the way the DeBartolo Corp. has been handling the SF 49ers, such as the timing of the announcement to move 49ers to Santa Clara, which has now cost SF & Bay Area the bid to be the US host city for 2016 Olympics, then you can fax Denise DeBartolo York and her husband Dr. John York at 330-965-2077. That is the corporation’s fax number.

Even if you think that these Ohio residents should sell the team to Larry Ellison, please let them know that.
