Enrico’s: Closed

I just walked through North Beach, and got an earful from Bamboo Hut bartenders across the street about the changing times, and more so, about: Enrico’s closure. More than 50 years there, and of course, the Bullitt scene where Steve McQueen gets info from bohemian informant (turtleneck, handlebars + goatee). Well, I’m really saddened, though I only went there a few times since moving to the hood. More notes, somewhat related: I saw two women handcuffed to a police car off off Broadway, and a huge school bus-sized paddy wagon, as well as 10+ cops patrolling the neighborhood. Either the usual thing for the Broadway corridor, or a response to Halloween?

i saw two derelicts in handcuffs just off broadway at columbus. there is always some what of a police presences on the strip, but it did seem like they were actually working instead of just sanding around with a thumb up thier ass. it is about time they start doing something about the scum. the real test is will be when summer roles around again, thats when sh!t is at its maximum capacity.

I noticed the emptied out cressant patio at Enrico’s the other night, on my way through NB from SoMa. I asked my cabbie about it, but he didn’t have any info.

I’m very saddened, as it was a favorite spot for me to meet up with out of town guests after sending them on a walking tour of the city. They hosted lots of live music (I last saw Lavay Smith and the Red Hot Skillet Lickers there) and the atmosphere was the rare mix of classic legend and current Scene.

Enrico’s was an institution, and I can only hope that an entity that respects that history will move in, and hopefully preserve the patio, while upscaling the interior.
