“Once More With Feeling” at the Parkway
After last year’s live staging of Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s Once More With Feeling: the Musical was canceled, this is about as close as you will get to Whedon-worshipping Nerdvana. It’s free, it’s awesome, it’s a sing-along and it’s at the fabulous Parkway. What more could you want?
Here are the event details.
To recap, for those of you who may be interested in attending but aren’t up your Buffy:
This episode falls at the start of the sixth season. All of the characters stand on the edge of massive change but none of them know how to talk about it with each other. So a demon comes to town with a curse that makes everyone sing out their deepest feelings for all to hear. The only problem is that sometimes people sing too long and dance too long and end up, well, exploding.
As for our heroes: Buffy is newly returned from the dead, her friends think they saved her from Hell but she can’t bring herself to tell them the truth and she’s finding it really hard to care about anything. Willow and Tara have been fighting about Willow’s addiction to magic, but Willow keeps mind-wiping Tara to make her forget the fights.
Xander and Anya are engaged, but nervous about their future. Dawn has been shoplifting and is a teenager. Spike is full of brooding unrequited love for Buffy. And Giles, Buffy’s mentor, thinks that he is too much of a safety net for her and so he must abandon her and let her fail on her own so that she’ll grow.
Yes, I’m a Buffy nerd. I love this episode.
One of the real joys of it is seeing the extras burst into song about parking tickets or dry-cleaning as our heroes try and figure out how to deal with the demon and all of their secrets being exposed.
