The bounty at Bird & Beckett

With the buzz of LitQuake lingering in the air, and bookstores around town bustling with festival events, it should be noted that a few of the local bookkeepers (of the literary sense, not the gambling sense) offer the combo of great browsing and great performances ALL YEAR ROUND.

My current favorite is Bird & Beckett Books and Records, on Diamond Street in Glen Park. This truly old-school neighborhood shoppe offers a great selection of reads, from well-worn copies of Ulysses to the latest in literary journals. They spin some great vinyl, and offer up live jazz on a regular basis, Friday evenings and 1st Sundays.

Also, if you haven’t time to wind around their labyrinth-layout looking for that newly released Didion anthology, you can call in your order for pickup. Patronage through a tier of B&B memberships earns you goodies and a range of discounts, and when they rang up my selections this weekend, they bundled them up in a recycled bag from Lucca’s Deli, which just reinforces that these guys have good taste.
