Are you paying too much in rent?

A friendly tipster sent this to me. It’s a cool little tool that uses Craigslist’s apartment listings and Google Maps to show you the average price for renting in any neighborhood in SF. The prices seem inflated to me–$1,707 for a one-bedroom in the Lower Haight?–which probably means I haven’t been apartment hunting in years.

It not only tells you the average price, by the way, but also drops a flag at every Craigslist listing that you can click on to pull up the details of that listing. This might end up being a slick interface for apartment hunting on CL.

A great service site, however my quick ‘test search’ turned up CL listings that were not at all timely – some from February of this year! A bit of a tease, and with that lag in timeline, I’m not sure how accurate the pricing is.

and $1,700 for a 1BR in LHaight? – yep, it’s been a long time since you’ve looked. When I started searching for housing back in 2000, that was the going rate for a nice studio.

Damn. I’ve been very lucky then. Both of the 1BRs I’ve lived here in the *ahem* Castraight have been way less than $1,700.

Of course the discount could have been for the rats . . .

You might have better results with the scrape some brilliant fellow made of Craigslist housing ads and the Google API over at
These appear to be current ads. One nice effect is that you can choose your price range(s) as well as neighborhoods, and the advanced search lets you pick minimum number of bedrooms, and whether it’s critter-friendly rental.
Includes places for sale as well as rentals.
