Castro Day Finally Arrives…

Nope …

Not a new gay holiday named after the upper Market St neighborhood…

(or even a tribute to the ailing Cuban dictator popular with the beret & camoflage pants crowd…)

Today is “Tommy Castro Day” in San Francisco as proclaimed by Mayor Gavin Newsom!

who is Tommy Castro you ask?
BQ-Tommy-8x10-copy.jpg

Well, he’s some white guy from San Jose that plays the blues…

Perhaps the mayor has enjoyed Castro’s soundtrack contributions to mediocre TV programs like “Nash Bridges”, “NBC’s Comedy Showcase ” and “The Young and the Restless.” Uh…

still perplexed? read on why your day today in SF actually belongs to Tommy and Tommy alone…

Well, I actually have no idea why they are dedicating the whole darn day to him… maybe he’s got some ill backstage partyin’ story about the mayor he promised to keep quiet…

( course Billy Getty has plenty of those, and I don’t think they even named a half day after him yet)

Or maybe Tommy played a gig to retire some of that campaign debt…

Anyhow…
Here’s a cut from his last disc called Soul Shaker, during which he name drops our very own Hwy 80 & The Golden Gate… d’ya think that won him official stauts ?

Tommy Castro - Take Me Off The Road

In order to properly celebrate the mayor declaring the whole frickin day to him…uh you’ll have to go to Slims tonight.

THE TOMMY CASTRO BAND
Daniel Castro ( no relation to Tommy apparently)
Saturday, October 14 @ Slims 333 11th St
$16 - Doors 8, Show 9

For those who can’t make it, just wait around , til Tommy’s new album, Painkiller, comes out, maybe the painful mystery will be revealed then.

As I understand it, it’s already in the can & scheduled for release on The Blind Pig label in January…

May your aching go away by then

I should hope not. Someone might want to mention to Mr. Castro that it’s Highway 101 that crosses the Golden Gate Bridge, and not Interstate 80. The defined western terminus of Hwy 80 is actually at Hwy 101, in downtown San Francisco, and ends on the eastern side in Teaneck, NJ, (not NYC).

Astroturf is vapid, not viral marketing. Having a day proclaimed in someone’s honor is as simple as making a request: http://www.sfgov.org/site/mons_index.asp?id=23764
Most folks or organizations that are granted a Proclamation actually get a certificate that they can display.
