The dreaded line of SUVs

Line of SUVs outside the school

My house is two blocks away from an elementary and a middle school, so every day twice a day I see the scene in this photo: an enormous line of SUVs stretching far down the street.

I am sure some people have sleeping babies strapped into carseats. Those of you with small children strapped in, go ahead and line up. But the rest of them, for god’s sake, park a couple of blocks away and walk! Walking! Not so bad for you! It’s a nice day out!

Oh, and this corner and the one on the other side of the school - both of them need a 4-way stop with stop signs and crosswalks. The SUVs are especially scary-huge when you’re crossing in front of them. I’m not buying into a stereotype when I say that damn near everyone in them is on the phone and drinking a latte… and they are also ill tempered at being in traffic. Traffic they’re needlessly causing.

The middle school kids who walk by my house every day, on the other hand, make everything lively and cheerful! It’s nice that someone still walks to school and back.

tell me about it. I live right across from the front door of an elementary/middle school in Glen Park. 8am-8:35, and 2:30-3:30 is a nightmare of double parked SUV’s and minivans. Apart from the noise of honking and engines running, the real nuisance is the blockage of traffic which inevitable causes at least one enraged commuter to gun it around the parental taxi stand. It makes for a very dangerous half an hour each morning. The idling double parkers also cause a lot of soot to be deposited on my house - I notice the difference when school is out in the summer.

Would schools ever be pro-active about this, and map out ‘prefered’ drop points a block or two away from the main drive as a means of streamlining the inevitable traffic flow? Pin those maps to the shirts of the tykes and send ‘em home?
