Black Thursday at the Shark Tank*

I don’t hold out much hope for the San Francisco 49ers or the Oakland Raiders this year. It looks to be a long and painful season. The kind of season where only the most die-hard fan may want to keep that team banner flying from their SUV window.

I am left with pinning all my hopes for some home-team pride on the San Jose Sharks. Tonight the San Jose Sharks are facing the St. Louis Blues at the Tank (HP Pavilion)

Three Goals in the First Four Minutes, Sharks Trail 2-1 –but, you have to love the team colors: pacific teal, grey, and black.

Michalek Scores Two Power Play Goals, Sharks Lead 3-2 !!!

Ice Hockey has some interesting rules, and terms to learn. A match penalty can be assessed for attempting to injure another player in any manner, but the rules go on to include a list of infractions that include, biting, hair pulling, kneeing, spearing, head-butting, slew-footing** and something called butt-ending***.

Game Tied 3-3 at the end of the second period.

To save $59,000 a year the Sharks are putting an end to the free downtown fan shuttle bus and adding an ice cream truck. Are they planning to keep the truck operating when the temperatures drop this winter?

The San Jose Sharks newly acquired forward Mark Bell was booked Sept. 4 on suspicion of felony drunken driving and hit-and-run. The case has been delayed twice, so tonight Bell is out on the ice.

Bell Scores First As Shark, 4-3

With 5.6 seconds to go the Blues tie it up 4-4

Team Teal with a win in overtime! 5-4

Who needs football? Not me.

*The San Jose Sharks have declared “Black Thursday” as they will wear their alternate black sweater for every Thursday night home contest during the 2006-07 season.

** Slew Footing, which is the action of a player using his feet to knock an opponent’s skates out from under him with a kicking or leg dragging motion from behind, has become a common infraction throughout Minor Hockey leagues across the country. Although slew footing is dangerous, it has become a desirable tactic used by smaller, weaker players to gain an advantage on larger, stronger ones by placing them off balance and making it easier to get the puck.

*** Butt-ending occurs when a player slides his upper hand (the hand closest to the top end of the hockey stick) down the shaft of the stick a few inches, and uses the remainder of the exposed stick above the upper hand to hit an opponent.
