The Crocodile Hunter Has A Posse

Just caught this on Boing Boing; I followed the post’s link to find the above pic via Flickr comments. A wonderful riff on the Shepard Fairey Andre the Giant OBEY street art campaign, here in San Francisco, in honor of Steve Irwin. Badass! Anyone know where these are?

I’ve seen some of these posters in my neighborhood on 3rd and 2nd street underneath the freeway overpass to the Bay Bridge.

When I first saw them I got kinda sad. I know he was a ‘public figure’ and everything, but the guy is dead. If we really respected his memory, maybe we could just leave him alone for a while?

But no. His image is wheat-pasted in a derivative style for our mirth.

It’s amusing – yes. And I think it’s done with a good heart (well, a good enough heart, perhaps with irony set on “too high”).

but I’m getting less and less tolerant of this form of “art” or “vandalism” as it used to be called. The cute painted utility cover, perhaps, but especially these paper things get tattered and become wet masses of grossness in the rain. They peel and fly about. They look dirty and streaked and ugly. They are litter.

And they are placed on public property. Or at least on property not owned by the maker. That’s not cool. SF already can’t afford to do much of anything in the city – why strain the coffers with more to clean up?

I think he’d be honored to have his image immortalized in the form of street art. He’s probably somewhere in the afterword right now jabbing the “Grizzly Man” in the ribs
    over this one.

Yeah, but what if we showed him footage of this street art in a balled up mash floating down a sewer drain and choking a dolphin?

    There’s dolphins in the sewer?
    are they huge man-eating dolphins?
I think Steve Irwin would be stoked to learn about dolphins that have evolved to live in the urban environment.
