Fire South of Market closes 5th St Off-Ramp

A fire in an old uninhabited apartment building undergoing remodeling at 5th & Clara has shut down the 5th St Off Ramp since about 2:30 pm. The 4 alarm fire has over 100 firefighters engaged, sent plumes of acrid black smoke soaring over South of Market, and the store below has undergone some serious water damage while firefighters battle the smoldering blaze. Fifth Street between Folsom and Harrison streets are closed as is Harrison Street between Sixth and Eighth streets.

The building is the home of the Olympic liquor store & restaurant, upstairs is the Global Village Hostel which had been empty during renovations.

They say the offramp will be up around 4:45… I hope so, or else the Bridge is going to SUCK today.
