The downtown lights at night
I love downtown at night, right here in Yerba Buena Gardens. City centers like this, parks with fountains surrounded by skyscraper office buildings, are so stunningly beautiful and strangely empty at night.
In Houston when I was a teenager we would drive 40 minutes into downtown at night just to sit on the lawn in front of the Transco Tower, or play around in the fountains at Rice, just because they were beautiful places to be. Whatever its flaws might be, Yerba Buena is super beautiful at night! How strange that the movie theaters are full of people, and bars and restaurants, but the most beautiful places are underused.
Last night I was struck by the amount of color in the landscape, the glowing blues and greens, reds and yellows. Some were deliberate illuminations of the park, and some were from neon signs reflected in skyscraper mirror glass.

I’ve only lived in SF for 3/4 months and this is one of the many places that I still need to venture to.
Liz, sounds like you would enjoy the Winter Walk of Light, a night when Yerba Buena Gardens is filled with Filipino Christmas lanterns. Click on the link to see some pictures from last year.
