Hidden Tunnels, Bike Thiefs, Tourists

Got off my ass and went on a bike ride yesterday, and saw two tourists biking in high heels. Other news: bikes get stolen from outside of Sports Basement in Chrissy Field, on Saturdays, so much that they are now letting you haul them in and put them behind the counter. So Lame! There has got to be a ring of hell for bike thieves. They’re tantalized with the latest Specialized bike but can never quite get their hands on it. On this topic: Bicycle Thief is showing in Washington Square Park 9/23.

Conversation wtih a taxi driver, then a neighbor, about future tunnels.

Taxi Driver: Taxi Driver had heard that he and I, North Beachers, are getting a tunnel in 2009. Neighbor confirmed this as “just talk” but also noted that Muni had been thinking of reviving the tunne that goes under the Fort Mason hill (directly below photo here). There are rail tracks going along Marina Green, sometimes you see the tracks, sometimes you feel the pattern of the old ties as you speed along.

So they prove right, somewhat, if Wikipedia is to be believed:

A further underground expansion for the T Third is being planned. Dubbed the Central Subway, four proposed new underground stations at Moscone Center, Market Street and Stockton Street, Union Square, and Chinatown are being studied for a possible target date of 2009. A future extension into North Beach and Fisherman’s Wharf may be built in a third phase.

1 year after Beijing’s Olympics, the same year as the Maritime Musem opens up at Aquatic Park.. should be a good year. Of course the way we get stuff done here it’ll be open in 2015.

Muni does plan to tunnel to North beach as part of the central subway plan, but they have no plans to install stations at that end because it was not part of the original environmental impact report for the central subway project.
