Giants sweep! — They still suck

But it’s pure entertainment at this point, y’all. They’re going nowhere.

Yes, Armando Benitez managed a 1-2-3 ninth inning to hold a one-run lead — God knows the last time that happened — and the Giants came from behind in the 7th to go ahead.

But they’re 11-10 in August, while the Dodgers went 16-5 in the same period. And guess what, they’re separated by those 4.5 games:

NL West W L Pct GB Streak L10
--------------- -- -- ---- --- ------- ---
LA Dodgers 66 60 .524 -- Lost 2 6-4
San Diego 64 62 .508 2.0 Won 3 5-5
Arizona 62 65 .488 4.5 Lost 4 3-7
San Francisco 62 65 .488 4.5 Won 3 8-2
Colorado 59 66 .472 6.5 Lost 4 3-7

Another clue: The Padres aren’t going to play dead, either.

As for the wild card, the Giants are like in 6th place. It doesn’t matter how many games behind they are because there’s no freakin’ way you can pass 5 other teams in late August.

So enjoy baseball in the warm weather of late summer, kids, because the season ends on Oct. 1 and it’s going to be a long, long winter.

Yes, it’s the baseball–and Giants–fan’s rollercoaster ride of pessimism and optimisim, for the heart of the baseball fan (unless in Tampa Bay or KC) is always filled with a sliver of hope. Hey, 4 games back–ya gotta have hope. Maybe only to be let down once again, but you never know . . . Still, next year is time for a new GM and manager–and new corners in the outfield.
