Goats in the City

I was a little surprised to find a herd of goats in a small hillside right off of Chestnut Street (Russian Hill). It looked like there were at least 50 of them if not more, just grazing on the grass and hay. They don’t appear to be wild, as there is a fence surrouding the entire area, however I highly doubt they are pets either. If anyone has information regarding these odd goats, let me know…

Nicholas, here’s a link for the goats: http://www.goatsrus.com/goats.htm
I have also seen goats along 101 at the 85 interchange in south San Jose clearing the brush along the freeway. They are fun to watch each evening when I am driving home.
I live nearby- I’ll check it out. I was housesitting up there and lost a cat, and the cat ran through some fences and into a farm-like area. I wonder if this is the same one. I didn’t notice any goats, though. One thing: it’s so rocky and steep, makes sense to keep goats.
You can’t miss them, on the corner of Chestnut and Larkin (right next to the steps that go down to Bay street)…
I saw them! I’ll put up the photos on my flickr stream. I’m glad they’re using this land- I thought it’d been kind of overgrown and ineffectually used for a while. A friend mentioned that the goats may be used as low-cost wild growth control, a.k.a. mowers.
While I uploaded my photos on flickr, did a check and found some other Goats R Us goats doing some mowing work:

Apparently the goats are on a scheduled rotation around the steeper city park sites - beats the heck out of a spewing riding lawn-mower anyday!
