One Nation
“I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands. One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
On July 4, 1776, we claimed our independence. A day to celebrate. A day now simply known as the Fourth of July.
This year, in San Jose, the event marking Independence Day will not be simple nor will it be straightforward. Here the Fourth of July will be called a “Festival for Independence” and will be offered to us as a celebration of diverse cultures. Why has someone deemed it necessary to point out our differences? I am growing tired of the ‘can’t we all get along’ label that has found its self attached to events.
San Jose is made up of a wonderful mix of people. White, Hispanic, Black, Japanese, Vietnamese, Asian Indian, Chinese, Samoan, Filipino and many others all live, work and play together in our valley. It is admirable that our differences are recognized and respected but more importantly let us celebrate that we are all now one nation. We do get along and for the fifth consecutive year, the City of San Jose has been confirmed as the safest big city in the nation. As a cab driver, and a woman, I feel quite comfortable working in this city.
San Jose, we do not need a celebration of diverse cultures. Rather, we should be touted as the city that exemplifies our nation’s indivisible strength and unity.
