Blowfish Sushi Robbed at Gunpoint

blowfishsushi.jpgA friend bartends at Blowfish Sushi, beloved haunt for tasty fish bits, and last night at about midnight they were robbed by two men, one with a shotgun, the other with a handgun. There were two tables of diners still in the restaurant when they came in and shot three times into the ceiling. One of the men (she described as “gangsters”) pistol-whipped a waitress in the face so badly she is still in the hospital.

Here’s the first news article to hit the wires: Gunmen Terrorize Diners At Famed SF Sushi Restaurant (with video). Go by and give your love to Blowfish when you can.

That is effed up! That poor waitress. (And will I be the first one to make a bad taste joke out of the restaurant’s “To Die For” tagline? Predictably, yes.) Seriously though, acts of such random brazenness are chilling.

A couple of months ago, I met up with friends for a birthday cocktail gathering at the Orbit Room literally just as the police were exiting from responding to a robbery there. This was early. Like 7:00pm. The barstaff was still so visibly shaken that we couldn’t find out from them exactly what happened (if they were armed etc.) It’s bad enough that so many late night convenience store clerks put themselves in harm’s way. But you’d think you’d be insulated a bit better at an all out ‘establishment’. Criminal desperation repeatedly demonstrates otherwise.

p.s. – Clicking on the video, just how bizarre is that the first thing you see, is not a report on the violent robbery. But a 20 second clip of cuddly bears cavorting about, cherishing rolls of toilet paper. And I thought my joke above was in bad taste… ;-)
