On to His Next Trip

San Francisco recently lost one of its more interesting residents, cab driver, self- proclaimed inventor and political candidates, Mr. James Dunn. Checking out the San Francisco political site “The Usual Suspects” and scrolling down to the candidates for the San Francisco Board of Supervisors – District 6 you will find the name of James Leo Dunn. He had run for Supervisor twice before. Mr. Dunn passed away before election day, 2006, so we will never know how many votes he would have received this time around.

Mr. Dunn had some rather unusual ideas and solutions for what he considered the problems of San Francisco. Like his plan to have the homeless tunnel under Nob Hill or for a glass and steel pyramid housing structure that would be rented for $288 a month for 12 years when it would then be paid off.

I was bummed when I heard he passed away too. What a character. A coworker and I were utterly fascinated by his housing ‘plan’. In fact, I’m looking at his flyer from “11/5/2″ on my cube wall right now featuring the line (his was all in caps. I’ll spare you.):

“Imagine a 288 foot tetrahedron. Elevated 36 feet above your block. 576 units/576 sq. ft. 288 a month for 12 years. And it’s yours.”

    I’m still in awe…

I alerted my sadly now former coworker to his passing, and she sent back a write-up she did about him back in the day when she first came across our now beloved Dunn flyer. I love it!
